From Lobotomy to Autonomy: Demystifying Contemporary Psychiatry

Cultural representations of psychiatry are filled with the imagery of a darker past. Our MD psychiatry training barely scratches the surface of the philosophical and ethical struggles that have marked the history of psychiatry and continue to shape public perceptions and the attitudes of medical students and professionals alike. The profession has changed, yet the past continues to fuel the stigma attached to mental illness and its treatment. This session aims to demystify some of the practices and principles of modern psychiatry from a historical perspective, with the hope of better equipping students to understand and tackle ethical issues in psychiatry.
